Siemens -Amesim Software for EV Applications (PEV-7.1)

Description

Simcenter Amesim, part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, is an integrated, scalable system simulation platform widely used for designing, simulating, and optimizing electric vehicle (EV) applications. It allows engineers to create a comprehensive digital twin of an entire EV, from concept to final validation, by combining various multi-physics libraries.

Simcenter Amesim offers numerous functionalities to manage the complexity of EV systems:

  • Battery and Fuel Cell Management: Engineers can model, characterize, and simulate the electro-thermal behavior of energy storage systems to optimize energy performance and range. This includes:
    • Pack Design: Sizing the battery pack (determining the number of cells, cell technology, etc.) using pre-sizing tools to meet specific voltage, power, and energy requirements.
    • Thermal Management: Designing and optimizing cooling subsystems to ensure the battery operates within safe temperature limits, which is critical for performance and longevity.
    • Aging Studies: Evaluating battery aging behavior for different charging strategies and daily use profiles to predict capacity loss over time.
  • Electric Powertrain Design: The software supports the modeling and integration of all critical powertrain subsystems, including electric machines, inverters, and transmissions.
    • Pre-sizing and Performance Analysis: Pre-sizing electric motors and assessing performance and energy consumption.
    • Thermal Management: Designing cooling systems for electric motors to prevent overheating.
    • Control Strategy Evaluation: Validating control laws for electric drive systems using Model-in-the-Loop (MiL), Software-in-the-Loop (SiL), and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) testing environments.
  • Vehicle Thermal Management: Maximizing the overall thermal performance and energy efficiency of the EV, including HVAC systems and the integration of energy recovery systems. The software can graphically visualize energy flows to optimize efficiency.
  • Energy Management and Drivability: Simulating complete driving cycles (e.g., NEDC) to analyze power consumption, optimize energy flow, and balance conflicting attributes like performance and drivability.
  • System Integration: Simcenter Amesim is an open platform that seamlessly connects with other essential engineering tools such as CAD, 3D CAE (e.g., Simcenter 3D), and control software like MATLAB/Simulink, ensuring a unified engineering ecosystem.
